Assembly Member Saldaña Assumes Duties in Assembly leadership
Assembly Member Lori Saldaña was sworn into her new role as Assembly Speaker pro Tempore in a ceremony in the Capitol on December 1st. Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, the first African-American woman to lead a state legislative body, appointed Saldaña to preside over the daily operations of the Assembly Floor. Saldaña, a Democrat, promised an even-handed approach to running the Assembly floor often polarized by strong party divisions and deep ideological differences. “To my colleagues, I pledge to run this house efficiently, fairly and in the best interests of the people of California,” she said. “I look forward to a very challenging, but also a very successful year.” Saldaña said she is confident that the newly-elected class of legislators from both parties will provide an opportunity for a fresh approach to dealing with the state’s fiscal challenges and the consequences of economic downturn. “With the severe economic situation affecting their daily lives, Californians are expecting a pragmatic approach to governing,” Saldaña said. “My hope is that we can all cooperate to solve the real-world problems faced by our constituents.” A Special Invitation from Assembly Member Lori Saldaña Fourth Annual Holiday PartyFeaturing a needs drive for Military Families Wednesday, December 10th Please click here for more information or to RSVP Assembly Democrats Already Preparing for Another Tough Budget YearSpeaker Bass and Assistant Speaker

(Sacramento) – Assembly Democrats have introduced a package of legislation designed to improve the state’s environment while at the same time boosting the growing market for “green-collar” jobs. As we learn in this Assembly Web Report, Democrats in the California Assembly want California to again lead the nation – this time by getting out in front with a comprehensive strategy to spur green business and advance green collar jobs for Californians in everything from high tech work in the lab, to installing one of our million solar roofs to weatherizing homes and businesses.

California’s Budget Challenge: Establish priorities and explore streamlining before making drastic cuts
By Assembly Member Lori Saldaña
Earlier this month, the Governor unveiled his solution to the state’s $14.5 billion budget crisis – a draconian 10 percent across-the-board cuts to most services provided by the state.
His proposal includes drastic cuts in public safety, the potential release of thousands of prisoners, the closure of 48 state parks and cuts to lifeguard staff at local state beaches.
The budget crisis is dire, but the pain of these heavy-handed and ill-considered cuts will definitely not be felt equitably.
